What is the claim?

Social media and online reports are circulating information about a nationwide bank strike in India from 28 September to 30 September 2026.

What we found

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and other unions have called a proposed three-day nationwide strike from 28–30 September 2026. The main unresolved demand highlighted by the government is implementation of a five-day banking workweek.

The Ministry of Finance has also said that the strike coincides with the half-yearly closing on 30 September, which could affect customers, businesses and banking operations.

Important update for customers

The Government has announced that Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will function normally on Sunday, 27 September 2026, before the proposed strike.

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that Sunday.

Which services could be affected?

During a strike, physical branch services may be affected, particularly at participating public-sector banks. Reports also indicate that services such as cheque clearing and some branch-based transactions could face disruption.

Digital banking services such as UPI, mobile banking and internet banking may continue to operate, but customers should not assume that every service will be unaffected during the strike period.

What should customers do?

If you have an important branch transaction, consider completing it before 28 September.

Customers can also use digital banking facilities where available.
